Locals have hailed new double yellow lines, but some fear the “accident waiting to happen” has just been moved.

Lines were painted in Red Lion Lane, Kings Langley, on Monday and Tuesday (April 24 and 25) this week, along with others in Rucklers Lane and London Road.

Previously, opposite the former Sappi development, where many have complained there isn’t enough parking, cars would regularly park partly on the pavement all along the road.

Dan Carpenter, who walks along the road from work most days, said: “The road is a nightmare for pedestrians.

"You frequently had to walk in the road due to cars blocking the pavement and it’s horribly unsafe for drivers of anything larger than a hatchback, often forcing vans etc on to the other side of the road.

“The yellow lines are long overdue.”

Another local, Nicola Johnson, who acknowledged the lines were necessary, noticed Lower Road around the corner appeared to have the very same parking problem as soon as the lines were painted.

Sharing a photo of the road, she added: “The problem has now been pushed to Lower Road which is a busier and more dangerous road.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen. Did the council not realise this would happen?”

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We appreciate that the parking restrictions will cause some inconvenience to residents, however the previous situation with cars parking on the pavement has caused real problems for people wanting to use the road.

“Cars have been blocking the pavements, forcing pedestrians, and in particular anyone pushing a buggy or using a wheelchair or mobility scooter, into the road.”

They added that the cars had also forced drivers onto the wrong side of the traffic island and caused problems for people accessing to canal towpaths.

“Our priority is to make sure the road is safely usable by road users, in particular pedestrians, of all ages and abilities,” they added.

“While we have looked at alternative solutions, double yellow lines along this stretch of road is the only feasible option.”
