New affordable homes have been officially opened on a former St Albans garage site.

St Albans’ mayor Annie Brewster cut the ribbon on the four new properties, which were built by the Hightown Praetorian and Churches Housing Association, on Friday, July 5.

The four two-bedroom homes are located in White Hedge Drive.

Councillor Brewster said: "This development is an absolutely wonderful scheme and it is extraordinary what has been achieved on what was a rather unattractive disused Council garage site.

"Full marks to the architect - I hope the neighbours are thrilled with how well these four affordable homes nestle into the area.

"I look forward to partnering with Hightown in the future, especially with the homes being developed on other old garage sites."

Two of the homes will be let out through the district council’s letting scheme and the other two will be sold through a shared ownership scheme.

David Bogle, chief executive of Hightown said: "We appreciate the active co-operation of the council in helping us to house those who have supported housing needs and those who can’t afford to buy or rent at market rates.

"We are pleased to have been able to transform this brownfield site into much needed homes that people can afford."
