Wildlife walks, bird box making and animal rescue were on the agenda at a Bushey nature reserve last weekend.

Fishers Field Nature Reserve in Bushey held its annual event on Sunday, September 29 to promote local wildlife.

Sandwiches, homemade cakes and soft drinks were provided free of charge and visitors had the chance to make their own bird box, learn more about recycling, and meet a representative from Animal Rescue and some of his rescued animals - including Frankie the hedgehog who lost the toes on his right paw.

The event was organised by Hertsmere Borough Council in partnership with the Friends of Fishers Field, Countryside Management Service and the RSPB.

Betty McLean, from Friends of Fishers Field, said around 150 people attended: "The community picnic was a huge success and above all, the sun shone, which was a bonus to the successful day."

Francesca Fitch, area parks officer, said: "Everyone had a fantastic day. The turnout was the best we have seen since the annual picnic day first started.

"We had fantastic weather and it was great to see so many families, some with three generations - children, parents and grandparents.

"For some people it was their first visit to the reserve."
