Sports clubs and leisure centres are getting set to fling open their doors for National Fitness Day on Friday, September 26.

Backed locally by Hertfordshire County Council, the event claims to be the largest celebration of physical activity in the UK, with many venues allowing people in to exercise for free.

County councillor Teresa Heritage said: "We all know about the benefits of exercising and being active, although sadly, for many of us getting fit can be a bit of a slog.

"Research shows that if you exercise with others you are far more likely to stick at it and that’s what’s at the heart of National Fitness Day. It’s all about providing inspiration and opportunities to get active and have fun.

"Keeping active reduces your risk of serious illness and strengthens muscles and bones. It can also be a great way of dealing with stress and lifting your mood if you’re feeling down.

"Government guidance suggests that adults need to be active for at least two and a half hours a week, while youngsters aged between five and 16 need an hour’s physical activity per day."
