Children at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Merry Hill Road, Bushey, were inspired this week by a visit and workshops with one of the country’s best loved children’s poets, Brian Moses.

The aim of the visit was to engage all children when reading, writing and performing a variety of poetry.

Brian, who has sold more than a million poetry books and anthologies, performed some of his work during an assembly which incorporated a lively "poetry percussion show".

Watford Observer:

The children joined in reciting some of the repetitive parts and enjoyed seeing how poems come alive when using different voices or percussion instruments.

Brian, whose books include including Walking with My Iguana and I Go Ape, also worked with some Year 6 children to create a Writers’ Trail around the school grounds.

It is anticipated the whole school will be able to use the trail, or points along it, to enhance their writing experience.

He has also worked with children in smaller workshops encouraging their poetry writing.

The school day concluded with children performing their own newly-penned poems.

A successful evening session was held to which parents and their junior children were invited and together they composed poems about family life.

Moses said he enjoyed being at Sacred Heart and listening to the "fantastic" poems the children have written.

Headteacher Carolyn Hatch said: "The children have been very excited by this visit and have been inspired to write and perform their creations to each other.

"We are looking forward to seeing some of the children’s poems published on his website."
