Hertsmere Borough Council have increased the maximum loan available to help first time property buyers under the Local Authority Mortagage Scheme (LAMS).

The scheme, which was launched in 2012, is for first time buyers who can afford the mortagage repayments and have a five per cent deposit.

The council's executive agreed to increase the maximum loan available from £190,000 to £280,000 per property.

The increase reflects the rising house prices and because of the borough's close proximity to London.

Council leader, councillor Morris Bright, said: "We took this decision taking into account the high housing prices in the area and to ensure the scheme is supportive to first time buyers."
