A Northwood navy base held an open day this week in a bid to get more people to sign up as reservists.

Northwood-based HMS Wildfire is opened its doors at Northwood HQ, Sandy Lane, on Wednesday with the aim of getting more people to join the 2,300-strong list of reservists.

People attending the event met serving reservists, took part in activities and got an insight into life in the navy.

Commander Stephanie Shinner, Commanding Officer of HMS Wildfire, said: "Being a member of the Royal Naval Reserve is an excellent way to make a real contribution to the country, whilst gaining additional skills and knowledge.

"Reservists experience the action and adventure of life at sea, and develop new friendships that often last a lifetime.

"It’s a great way of experiencing life in the Navy without having to give up your day job and, for many people, it’s a chance to fulfil long-held ambitions.

"We welcome new recruits from all sorts of backgrounds. We pay people for their time and we’ll help them to develop skills, knowledge and personal qualities that can help in everyday life as well.

"I would like to welcome everyone interested in learning more to our RNR Live event on Wednesday evening, where experienced Reservists from HMS Wildfire will be on hand to answer questions and give advice."
