Residents are "horrified" to find that hazardous chemicals which have been dumped in their street in Bushey, are yet to be removed.

The chemicals, which were left outside the garages in Cotswold Avenue, have been there since at least December last year.

A 56-year-old resident said: "We reported the dumping of the chemicals, to Hertsmere Borough Council but are horrified that nothing has been done.

"There are children living around here, not to mention animals and wildlife - it's really dangerous. The council have told us that they can't identify what the chemicals are and therefore need to bring in a chemist."

Although a chemist has visited the site, which is now cordoned off, the chemicals are still there in the large plastic containers and barrels.

The resident added: "What makes it worse is that it has started to leak, there is white liquid, which looks like it's heading towards my garage. And because of it, I don't like the idea of going there or parking my car there.

"I don't know whether it's corrosive or explosive so don't know what it will do. This should have dealt with ages ago."

Where the chemicals are, many residents claim is a common place for fly-tipping. Since the chemicals have been there, a washing machine and a mattress have appeared.

A spokesperson for Hertsmere Borough Council said: "We are aware that a number of barrels filled with chemicals have been dumped at council garages on Cotswold Avenue in Bushey. We have cordoned off the area, put up warning signs informing the public. We've spread absorbent granules and placed sandbags around the barrels too.

"We apologise for the delay in removing these items, but they must be inspected and disposed of by a specialist company, which we hope will take place soon."
