Police have praised the family of Aqeel Khan for their “dignified conduct” during the murder investigation.

A jury found the 17-year-old accused of stabbing Aqeel, 18, not guilty of murder following a week-long trial at Luton Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Scott Winton from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, who led the investigation, said: “We acknowledge the findings of the jury who based their decision on the evidence they heard in this case.

“This has been a challenging inquiry and we remain grateful to Aqeel’s family for their dignified conduct and co-operation throughout our investigation.”

Watford’s Chief Inspector, Dave Wheatley, said his officers will continue to work with and support Aqeel’s family.

He added: “I fully understand that there may well be some concern in our community following today’s verdict.

“I would reassure people that officers from my Safer Neighbourhood Team are on hand and can be contacted should anyone wish to discuss their concerns or issues which may arise.”
