Children and adults of all ages had a chance to learn an instrument last weekend at a Watford music school event.

More than 200 people attended the event on Sunday, March 22, hosted by Music Gym in support of National Learn to Play Day, and over 12,000 free music lessons were given to participants.

Mayor Dorothy Thornhill also attended, trying her hand at the drums and listening to the performances.

Mayor Thornhill, who opened Music Gym in 2012, said: "This special place is not just about acquiring music skills but about performance and gaining confidence, making friends and so much more.

"The progress from the youngsters was a pleasure to listen to."

Owner of Music Gym, Alan Johnson, added: "It was a great day, people tried out instruments in lessons and many attended the live performances.

"It was inspiring to see how many people took up the offer of trying an instrument. Music tends to take a backseat in modern life and education but it is a vital part of our education and culture, and it can help people in so many ways.

"We need to try to keep the path open for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in musical activities."
