Twelve people helped spruce up a section of the Grand Union Canal last weekend.

The volunteers helped repair Common Moor Bridge on the Grand Union Canal last weekend.

Volunteers, working with Canal & River Trust and Croxley Green Parish Council, cleared out the old mortar and weeds from the bricks and filled in the gaps in the wall using fresh lime mortar.

The volunteers also gave the lock gates and a fence a fresh coat of paint and removed several bags of rubbish from the towpath.

Miriam Tedder, volunteer leader for the Canal & River Trust, said: “The group did a great job helping us to repair the bridge and generally tidy up the area.

“The bridge was starting to look sorry for itself so was in need of some love. We still have some more work to do but, once finished, the bridge should be as good as new.”

Barry Grant, from Croxley Green Residents Association, said: “We had a great day out on the canal helping the Canal & River Trust repair this bridge.

"Volunteering along the waterways is always great fun, especially when the sun is out.

“By working together we can make a difference and I would urge more people to come and join our group and help us look after our local bit of canal.”
