A teacher from Watford was in the hot seat last week as the nation watched him sweat out two rounds in Mastermind’s black chair.

Mr Roger Adams, 41, who lives in Watford and teaches history at Townsend School in St Albans, chose the life and times of John Lennon as his specialist subject for his appearance on Sunday night’s episode.

He achieved a score of 31, tying in first place, but officially came second because he had had more passes. But Mr Adams’ disappointment was short-lived because he made it through to the semi-final by being one of the highest scoring runners-up.

Speaking after the event, he said: “Actually taking part is not as nerve-racking as the waiting around beforehand. And the black chair is very comfortable.”
