European junior 800m champion Kyle Langford was among hundreds of runners taking part in the annual Abbots Langley Tough Ten at the weekend.

The event which included a Fun Run, 3k, 5k, and 10k race took place on Sunday at Manor House playing fields and ex-Watford Football Club and England manager Graham Taylor started the races.

Pat Waterton, of the Tough Ten committee, said: "The sun shone on us and we had a great turn out with the majority of participants happy and thanking us for the event.

"I swear a lot of people think we are paid professionals and don’t realise that the whole day is organised by a committee of five volunteers, with no athletic experience at all between us.

"In fact, come the day, we have a hell of a job trying to get people to help, so a big thank you to all those who did, otherwise there would be no race."

This year, 219 children took part in the Fun Run which was held as a lap of the field so parents could see them at all times.

The male and female winners of the 3k race were Oliver Cooper and Daisy Mainwaring, and Glen Watts and Victoria Walker were the first male and female across the finish line in the 10k.

Mr Langford was first across the line in the 5k but positions and trophies are awarded to those in the 11-15 age group, so the first male and female in this age group to finish were Thomas Fulton and Grace Ingles.

The 10k Winning Team Trophy went to parents and teachers from Bedmond Village Primary and Nursery School, the Senior School Trophy was won by St Albans School, the Junior School Trophy won by Divine Saviour School and the Emily Mott Millennium Cup was awarded to Emma Baldwin.

Ms Waterton added: "It will be some time before we know what we have raised as the sponsorship money will come in dribs and drabs right up until Christmas but we have fingers crossed that it will be a good year and we have money to distribute in the New Year at our presentation evening."

The Tough Ten has also been recently accepted as a registered charity by the Charity Commission and JustGiving pages will be available shortly for people wishing to contribute further to the event’s proceeds.
