The UK voting to leave the EU was not the right decision, according to a senior government minister.

South West Hertfordshire MP David Gauke campaigned for Britain to Remain in the EU.

But he told the Watford Observer South Oxhey voted “overwhelmingly” to Leave, while Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Moor Park and Eastbury voted to Remain.

Overall, 27,097 people voted to Leave and 25,751 opted to Remain in Three Rivers.

David Gauke MP said: “I’m obviously disappointed with the decision. I do not think it is the right result for the country.

“But the British people have spoken, we have to accept that result and we have to get on with it.

“As the Prime Minister has said, he is going to stand down and it will be for the new leader to decide when to trigger the Article 50.

“I think there are some significant challenges ahead in terms of the renegotiations over our relationship with the European Union but that is what we have been instructed to do.”

Mr Gauke also told the Watford Observer he is disappointed Prime Minister David Cameron will resign.

He said: “I am very sad to see David Cameron resign.

“He has served the country well and I think he will be badly missed.

“And I think it is a double blow for the country, losing him as Prime Minister and the UK voting to Leave.”

The Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney insisted it is “well prepared” to deal with Brexit.

And Mr Gauke, who is the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said: “There are contingency plans in place. There is a significant drop in currency and the stock market so we need to make sure the financial system is in a strong position to cope with that.”
