An application to turn a post office and newsagent into a takeaway and hairdressers or pharmacy will be debated by Watford Borough Council.

The plans, submitted by Leavesden Green Newsagent and Post office in Haines Way, will be considered at a Development Management Committee meeting, on July 27.

Of the 79 people consulted for the proposal, 53 have approved and 18 have objected.

Gurjit Dillon, the Leavesden Green postmaster, said: “We think what we’re doing is the best thing for the community.

“Unfortunately the post office just isn’t viable anymore. We’ve had a few issues with some of the residents but most people have been really supportive of the plans.”

Two attempts to convert the site were rejected in October 2015 because there was concern over the levels of noise and odour that the takeaway could create.

The council also said that staying open until 11pm could result in anti-social behaviour.

To address these concerns, a noise level report was carried out and the amended plans state that the takeaway will close at 9pm and that CCTV will be fitted to prevent anti-social behaviour.
