There wasn’t much chance of any traffic delays when this picture was taken but it shows a road that grew to become one of the major routes into Watford.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week it’s this scene of St Albans Road at its junction with Langley Road.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “I think someone living in this part of St Albans Road at the time of the photo (c1910) would certainly recognise the left-hand side of this view.
“The shop on the corner of Langley Road was Fishers the butchers, with a clothier next door. The first house of the next tall building was named Hasland House and had a walled front garden. This was the home and surgery of Dr Alfred Rudyard.
“The remainder of this block was named Portman Terrace and beyond that was Martindale Terrace with its multiple chimney pots.”
