This site was a place of learning for boys for approaching a century but it is now occupied by a doctors’ surgery.

The Watford Observer has again joined forces with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we recall Callowland School for Boys.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Callowland school was on two sites on Leavesden Road.

“This photo of the boys school was between Shakespeare Street and Acme Road. The other was near to Lowestoft Road and was for girls and infants.

“Like much of the housing in this area, the boys school was built in the late 1800s.

“The building occupied by the girls and infants still stand but the boys school was demolished c1986/87.

“In its place Manor View Practice was built around 1990.”
