Fantastic Day was the third UK top ten hit for Haircut 100 in April 1982 but the band’s lead singer was to experience loss joyful emotions later that year – after failing his driving test.

Nick Heyward featured in the Watford Observer in November 1982 after an unsuccessful second attempt to get his licence in Rickmansworth.

We reported the then 22-year-old had been trying to pass for four years and the test failure meant he was the only member of the group, which had three other top ten hits in 1981 and 1982, who was still unable to drive.

These archive pictures show Nick with Liza Collier, from Bushey, who also failed to get rid of her ‘L’ plates on that day.

However, the 17-year-old was a fan of the group at the time so her day wasn’t a total disappointment.
