A 42-year-old man has admitted shoplifting items worth nearly £6,500 in just two days in and around Watford.

Costel-Lucian Stoian, of Ilford Lane in Barking, appeared at Hatfield Magistrates' Court on Saturday, April 27, charged with two counts of theft from a shop and entering the UK without leave.

The Romanian national was accused of stealing a total of £5,366 in groceries, including bottles of alcohol, from the Tesco Extra in Lower High Street last Wednesday (April 24).

Police believe he stole the total from the shop on several occasions throughout the day.

Just one day later, he also attempted to leave the Tesco Extra in Borehamwood without paying for items worth £1,072.98, including bottles of champagne, but was arrested by officers on suspicion of theft.

Stoian, 42, pleaded guilty to both charges and was remanded into custody before his sentencing at St Albans Crown Court on May 24.
