A picture of the old Watford Conservative Club published recently prompted John Ausden, of Watford, to write in and provide additional pictures of the club, of which one is reproduced here. Readers were originally asked if anyone recognised the building and John "Lou" Lewis got in touch.

Mr Ausden writes: "John's parents, Mr and Mrs Vince Lewis, were stewards at the club until it was demolished in 1961, and subsequently at the new club in Rosslyn Road. I have enclosed photographs of North End House, Watford, which were taken from postcards dating from the early part of the 1900's.

"On the rear of one postcard the sender quite clearly writes that the card is of North End House. On close examination you can see that North End House and the old Watford Conservative Club are the same building only the creeper over the building varies from the picture published on Friday, February 3.

"The garden of the club then was enormous, stretching back to Rosslyn Road. The width was from Halsey Place up to the Shrubbery Car Park. In the spacious and wooded grounds were tennis courts and a first class bowling green. The new club was built at the south end of the grounds, adjacent to the Shrubbery Car Park.

"From memory, the club received £100,000 for the old club. They then spent £80,000 on the new club, in which they had only the best of everything. They had £20,000 left over and thought they were in heaven."
