Watford made hard work of a 3-2 win at Stockport County, not abetted by the second-half dismissal of Tommy Mooney.
This was the seventh consecutive game in which the Hornets had scored three or more goals.
Fictional supporter Gladys Protheroe's now regular birthday announcement was accompanied by an unprecedented bouquet of flowers from the host club, whose officials were understandably bemused by her subsequent non-appearance.
Protheroe's creator, also absent, was subsequently shamed into recompensing the Hatters for their outlay.
