A 2-1 defeat to low-scoring Premier League side Aston Villa sealed Bournemouth’s exit from The FA Cup last weekend, after Eddie Howe made eight changes from his side that lost to Leeds United in midweek.

Villa struck twice in the second half to secure the victory, although substitute Callum Wilson was able to add a consolation goal in the 90th minute – his 15th of the season.

Bournemouth currently sit atop the Championship table with 27 games played, although it is down to their superior goal difference (+29) they are able to do so.

Derby County’s victory over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday pulled the teams equal on points, with both clubs recording with 15 wins, six draws and six losses so far.

Whilst the club’s home form has been solid, it has been their consistency away from Goldsands Stadium where Bournemouth have mounted their title challenge.

The Cherries have taken 27 points from a possible 42 on the road, the best record in the league (compared to their home form being the eighth best in the Championship), whilst scoring 32 goals and conceding just 11.

However a surprise loss to Leeds at Elland Road last Tuesday ended a run of eight away games without defeat which dated back to September 30.

The club have also lost their last league game at home, falling short against a ten-man Norwich City earlier this month.

Much like the defeat to Leeds, the loss halted a succession of eight home games without defeat.

Their record in January of three defeats and one victory is in stark contrast to December, during which the club enjoyed a 100 per cent win record in the Championship; scoring 16 goals from five games.

Watford were able to secure a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth earlier in the season at Vicarage Road, courtesy of a late Craig Cathcart volleyed equaliser.

The Hornets will be buoyed by the fact that they have not lost away to Bournemouth since 1977, a total of seven games without defeat.

Whilst Eddie Howe is yet to sign anyone in the January transfer window, Birmingham City have announced they have turned down four offers from the club for 18-year-old winger Demarai Gray.

In other business, striker Matt Tubbs has left the club on a free transfer, joining fellow south coast side Portsmouth in League Two.

AFC Bournemouth starting XI vs Aston Villa (25/1/14): Camp; Smith, Elphick, Cook, Harte; Stanislas, MacDonald, O’Kane, Arter; Fraser, Kermogant.
