Troy Deeney scored the winner. Adlene Guedioura impressed on his second Watford debut. Gabriele Angella was unflappable in defence and Ben Watson was destructive in midfield. They all impressed against Fulham but who was the Hornets man of the match?

Italian centre-back Angella was deployed at the heart of the Golden Boys’ three-man backline and he produced an assured display.

He was rarely caught out of position and was a calm presence in the final stages when the Cottagers switched to a more direct approach. He was the sponsor’s man of the match.

Watson was the deepest Watford midfielder throughout the contest. He broke up several Fulham attacks and worked hard to restrict the visitors from building moment.

Guedioura returned to the Hornets from Crystal Palace on an emergency loan last week and it was like he had never been away.

The Algerian midfielder’s endless energy and impressive technique helped the Golden Boys keep possession and he linked up well with Almen Abdi throughout the contest.

Club captain Deeney’s display demonstrated why he has the armband. He netted the only goal of the game with a well taken half volley but it was his determination to close down and harass the Fulham defence which stood out.

And he played the final minutes of the game on the left wing in an attempt to stop the number of crosses coming into the Hornets’ penalty area.
