Hornets wing-back Miguel Layun scored an own goal as Mexico stepped up their preparations for the 2015 Gold Cup with a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Costa Rica on Saturday.

The 27-year-old played the full match for El Tri who were two goals behind at half time. David Ramirez broke the deadlock in the fourth minute before Layun inadvertently turned a cross into his own net shortly before the interval.

However, Miguel Herrera’s side fought back in the second half. Former Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur winger Giovani Dos Santos reduced the deficit before Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez headed home the equaliser.

Mexico will play one more friendly, against Honduras in the early hours of Friday morning, before beginning their Gold Cup campaign with a clash against Cuba on Friday, July 10.
