Watford captain Troy Deeney has signed a new five-year deal at Vicarage Road.

The talismanic skipper becomes the fourth member of last season's promotion-winning squad to commit his long-term future to the squad this week after fellow striker Matej Vydra joined permanently from Udinese, while Gabriele Angella and Craig Cathcart also signed new long-term deals.

A huge influence off the pitch as well as on it, Deeney only signed a new four-year deal last August but it comes as no great surprise that Watford have again moved to further safeguard their interest in arguably their most prized asset, while also rewarding the striker with an improved deal.

We reported last month that it was our understanding the Hornets had no interest in selling Deeney, nor were they under any pressure to, following reported interest from Newcastle United and Swansea City.

The Pozzo family, whose son Gino owns Watford, have proven in the past they do not sell their biggest assets unless they receive an offer that is too good to turn down.

The 27-year-old helped Watford to the Premier League last season by scoring 21 times and becoming the only player in the club's history to net at least 20 in three consecutive seasons.

The two-time Watford Observer Player of the Season now stands equal seventh with Maurice Cook on the Hornets' all-time scorers list in all competitions and needs five more goals to overtake John Barnes.
