Quique Sanchez Flores believes Mario Suarez will quickly get to grips with English football but admits the Watford midfielder needed “to think a bit quicker” during the Hornets’ defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spaniard, who joined the Golden Boys in January from Fiorentina, was handed his full Hornets debut against Spurs this afternoon but played just 45 minutes before being replaced by Valon Behrami at half time.

Suarez didn’t let Watford down but there were occasions during the opening period where the 28-year-old was caught on the ball as he assessed his options.

Suarez will of course improve. He is a Spanish international who has won La Liga and the Europa League. There is no doubting his quality.

But today wasn't the ideal match to feature in when you're settling into a new league.

“It was a tough match and the conditions of the game was very difficult,” Flores said when asked about Suarez after Watford's 1-0 defeat at White Hart Lane.

“He tried to block his area and play passing football. I think he needs to learn the pace of the game in England because he was surprised a few times when he tried to play. He needs to think a bit quicker.

“But I am happy. He is a very good player and top players can adapt very quickly to a new league.”
