Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes may not have felt like he had a point to prove at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but his display demonstrated Spurs lost faith in the Brazilian far too early.

The 34-year-old spent six years at White Hart Lane but his final two seasons in north London were filled with frustration and disappointment.

Gomes went from being the club’s first choice stopper and playing in the Champions League to watching on from the stands as Brad Friedel and then Hugo Lloris established themselves in the Tottenham side.

He left Spurs in 2014 on a free transfer and joined Watford. Gomes has since helped the Hornets win promotion and establish themselves in the top flight.

On Saturday he returned to White Hart Lane for the first time since leaving Tottenham.

He was warmly received and excelled. If it wasn’t for Gomes Watford would’ve left well beaten instead of the narrow 1-0 defeat they suffered.

“Of course it was a special game because of how I feel about the fans and club but I didn’t come to prove a point,” Gomes insisted after the game.

“I was given an amazing reception and I enjoyed that. There are still a lot of people who work around the club and there are still a few players here too from my time. The identity of the club is still here and it’s good to see that.”

Spurs dominated Saturday’s contest from start to finish. They ended with 26 shots to Watford’s three.

The one that proved the difference was Kieran Tripper’s 64th minute close range strike.

“We did well to hold them for a long period but they always had opportunities to score and unfortunately they did,” Gomes said.

“It’s difficult to come to White Hart Lane. I know from being a Spurs player. Any team that comes here is going to find it hard to get something.

“They played one of their best games I believe. They didn’t give us any chance to play. They have young players with a lot of energy and they made the most of that in the game.”
