Watford midfielder Valon Behrami will miss Sunday's Premier League match at Liverpool and is not expected to play again for the club this season.

Behrami has a rib injury which has kept him out of training and head coach Quique Sanchez Flores is unlikely to risk him with the Switzerland international hoping to feature in the European Championships next month.

Ahead of Sunday's game at Anfield, Flores said: “It’s fine and we’re working with a full squad except for Behrami. We’re ready to play against Liverpool in the next game.

“He has a rib injury and is not training with us. He will probably be out for the season because we need to take care of this player and with the European Championships it’s not necessary to risk him at this moment.

“Behrami is injured in the last two weeks and can’t breathe when he’s running."

Steven Berghuis made a big impression as a substitute in Watford's 3-2 win over Aston Villa last weekend and the winger will be hoping to earn his first start in the league.

Flores said: "We tried with Berghuis in the first half of the season in four or five matches playing 15 or 20 minutes but I felt it was not enough.

"He needed more gym work, stronger mentality to suffer in the training ground and now I think maybe he is ready but it’s not just about one performance."
