Watford defender Craig Cathcart played the whole game of Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Germany at Euro 2016 this afternoon in Paris.

Cathcart and his team-mates will have to wait to find out whether they will advance to the second round of the competition as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Michael O'Neill's side were under pressure throughout the first half and it was no surprise when Germany took the lead through Mario Gomez's 29th minute strike.

Germany, who had 28 shots and 79 per cent possession during a one-sided game, continued to dominate after the break and Northern Ireland were indebted to goalkeeper Michael McGovern after a string of superb saves.

These could prove significant as the side finished with a level goal difference and their total of three points may be enough to take them into the knockout stage.
