Nottingham Forest stand in the way of Watford Women and lifting the FA Women's National League Cup after the Golden Girls beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 to secure a place in the final.

Goals in the first half from Dre Georgiou and Faye Brough were enough to set up a shot at silverware at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium on Sunday, April 23.

Delighted head coach Damon Lathrope told the club website: “I’m over the moon for the group. I think we got what we deserved on the day, it was a very solid performance. We knew what we were coming up against in Wolves and nullified their threats, and were really good ourselves.

“We were excellent to a player. [Physicality] is not our forté but you can see from today and against Portsmouth that we’re more than able to compete. When the game settled down I think our quality showed.”

Lathrope’s side looked to get on the front foot from the opening whistle yesterday and Annie Rossiter wasn’t far away before Brough chanced her arm from range.

But the breakthrough was made in the 16th minute when the ball fell to Georgiou in the penalty area and she beat former Watford goalkeeper Nina Wilson with her fourth goal of the season.

Brough was looked sharp on her first start for the club and she earned a corner that ended with Megan Chandler heading wide, before winning the free-kick that she headed home to make it 2-0 shortly before the interval.

Hornets keeper Jacqui Goldsmid ensured that advantage was maintained when she got the better of a 50/50 challenge with Destiny Toussaint inside the 18-yard box.

Ellie Head could have scored a third for the Golden Girls when her shot was initially fumbled by Wilson, but the keeper was able to gather the loose ball.

Watford remained firm in defence and Lathrope made three attacking changes in the latter stages of the contest to keep his side on the front foot as the safely secured their passage through to the final to meet a Forest side who beat Portsmouth 5-0 in the other semi-final.

“It’s been a target all year,” said Lathrope. “It’s a nationally-recognised cup and I’ve said to the girls, it’s not been done for a long time at Watford.

“We want to be a team that’s remembered, and we’re only going to be if we bring trophies home. We’ve got one more game and it’ll be tough - Forest are a good team - but we’ll be prepared and ready to go.”
