A good week for Watford Women got even better this morning when midfielder Sophie McLean was announced as the Championship’s Player of the Week.

She scooped 38% of the votes, comfortable putting her ahead of Crystal Palace’s Elise Hughes (27%) and Annabel Blanchard (21%), while Megan Hornby of Blackburn Rovers – who visit Grosvenor Vale on Sunday to face Watford – was fourth with 14%.

McLean scored the first and third goal as Watford raced into a 3-0 lead away at Charlton Athletic, and then resisted a second-half fightback from the home side to secure a 3-2 win.

Her first goal came after just four minutes when she netted after striker Carly Johns had seized on an error by Charlton keeper.

McLean struck her second and Watford’s third deep into nine minutes of first-half stoppage time when she ran onto Lucia Leon’s pass in the box and hammered a low drive into the net between the keeper’s legs.

The midfielder moved to Watford from Billericay Town in February, having previously played in the Championship for Crystal Palace.

Last season for Watford she scored twice in 14 appearances, and she has started all three games in the Championship so far this season.

Watford host Blackburn at Wealdstone FC’s Grosvenor Vale stadium at 2pm on Sunday. You can find details of ticket prices and how to purchase them by clicking here.
