There may have been more than three weeks still to go until the big day but Watford was firmly gripped by FA Cup Final fever 40 years ago.
The Hornets had beaten Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in the semi-final to reach the Wembley showpiece for the first time in the club’s history.
Ahead of the showdown with Everton, a very public expression of gratitude to the club’s fans was displayed in the heart of the town centre that typified the strong links Graham Taylor had strived to forge between club and community during Watford’s golden era.

A Watford Observer photographer captured these shots of the banner in High Street on April 26, 1984 – 40 years ago today.
Stretching from above Marks & Spencer to Saxone shoe shop on the opposite side of the road, it read: ‘Watford F.A. Cup Finalists – Thanks To All Our Loyal Fans’.
